Lenders One Winter Summit Recap
SocialSurvey is honored to be among a select group of vendors that collaborate with the 230+ Independent Mortgage Banks, Credit Unions, and Community Banks that make up the membership of the Lenders One Cooperative (L1). Every winter, the members & vendor partners get together to network, share ideas and introduce new products.
Two weeks ago, L1 held their 2019 Winter Summit in Austin, TX.
Highlights from the exciting event are below:
MONDAY MORNING “UNMARKETING” KEYNOTE
The Monday morning keynote presentation by Scott Stratten, author of UnMarketing and co-host of the UnPodcast, was both educational and entertaining. He touched on several points about how companies, brands, and professionals can stand out from the crowd by doing things to WOW their customers.

A few people who heard Scott’s keynote came up to us and asked if we sponsored his presentation (no, we didn’t… but we should have!). His message aligns with what we discuss regularly on our blogs, videos and speeches around the country. Clients who empower their front line employees to #createwow will be well-fortified against well-known disrupters in the mortgage & real estate industries.
MONDAY CONNECTIONS HALL
After the lenders broke out into groups for closed door networking with peers, the main event took place: The Connections Hall. For 4 exhilarating hours, lenders visited with up to 12 different vendors in a “speed dating” format. This year, our reps at L1 were able to match us up with over 50 meetings–WOW! For that, we needed to bring a big crew.
Leena Kostelich (RVP for Northeast), Matt Curtis (RVP for South Central), Paul Cassidy (RVP for Pac Northwest) and Russ Crockett (RVP for Southeast) joined Craig Pollack (SVP of Client & Partner Relations) to spend quality time with many of the L1 members.
The Connections Hall is always fast-paced and hectic, but it provides us a great opportunity to let folks know what is new, exciting and different about SocialSurvey. Our roots are in the Mortgage Industry, and a lot of the credit for that belongs to Lenders One. We are one of their top partners, as evidenced by the 54 mutual L1/SocialSurvey clients among our 150 mortgage lending clients.
MONDAY EVENING AT AUSTIN CITY LIMITS
When the Connections Hall closed, everybody (Lenders and Vendors) took a short walk to The Moody Theater, site of Austin City Limits, the longest running music series in American television history. We were treated to some traditional Austin food, such as smoked brisket and ribs, as well as great live music from Austin’s #1 new band, The Black Pumas.
TUESDAY MORNING KEYNOTE
Tuesday kicked off with breakfast, an mPower panel and then a keynote speech from the new President & CEO of the Mortgage Bankers Association, Bob Broeksmit. After his remarks, he was interviewed by Eddy Perez, President of Equity Prime Mortgage (SocialSurvey client).
Attendees then had an opportunity to learn from a variety of speakers in breakout sessions. Leaders of some of the breakout sessions included Eddy Perez, Kristin Messerli of Cultural Outreach, Chad Jampedro, President of SocialSurvey client GSF Mortgage, and the entire leadership team at SocialSurvey client RWM Home Loans. It was great to see so many of our clients taking prominent positions at the conference.
Member Networking Sales & Marketing Session
After lunch, there was another round of lender breakout sessions. We later learned from a little birdie that SocialSurvey was mentioned favorably in the Sales & Marketing session. We don’t know which of our clients gave us praise, but we sure do appreciate it. As we always say, “Customers don’t always trust what you say about yourself, but they pay attention when your customers tell them the very same things.”
Getting a 5-Star Review Session
The last session of the afternoon was a breakout led by SocialSurvey’s very own Chief Marketing Officer, Clay Cahoon. We got a big assist from James Duncan of SocialSurvey client Thrive Mortgage, and Cody George from SocialSurvey client Magnolia Realty.
In true SocialSurvey style, we went the extra mile to Create Wow. First, Russ & Matt found a place in Austin that sells delicious doughnuts in a pink box (Voodoo Doughnut!). Needless to say, they were a big hit.
The session was also a huge hit. Attendees were broken into groups and given roles to play: Borrower, Agent, Loan Officer or Marketer. Each group was asked to brainstorm ideas for how you can WOW your client and make their experience worthy of earning a 5-star review.
The session was a WOW and we look forward to future opportunities to educate and #createwow at future L1 conferences.

The final event was a leisurely bus ride to the HQ & Tasting Room of Deep Eddy Vodka. Great vodka cocktails, cornhole, food trucks and live music accompanied lots of conversations and light networking.
Everybody had early flights back home…and, back to work. It is not easy to #createwow, but we love to do it and are thrilled to partner with L1. Looking forward to the L1 Summer Summit 2019 in Seattle!
